Debit cards arriving at farmers' markets

More Vermont farmers' markets are accepting debit cards and electronic food stamps this summer, making it easier for people to buy local produce, organic cheeses and homemade breads and pies.
Last year, three markets - Brattleboro, Bellows Falls and Winooski - experimented with wireless card readers that made it possible for debit sales and electronic benefit transfers, used for food stamp benefits.
The markets reported sales of between $700 and $950, but the sales are expected to increase this year.
The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont has expanded the program to include 10 markets.
The association believes the move will increase sales and give food stamp users access to fresh, locally grown products.
